Man killed in police shooting – Brantnews.com – Local Brantford … An 18-year-old Brantford man is dead after a shooting incident involving Brantford police Wednesday night. Brantford police officers responded to a call of a man acting in a violent manner Wednesday at approximately 9:51 p.m. at a unit in Drumlin Co-Operative Homes Inc. on the corner of Sympatica Crescent and Bonheur Court. After a confrontation between officers and Brantford resident Evan Jones, first outside then inside the home, Brantford police fired at least one shot, which struck Jones. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Neighbors and friends of the deceased said they believed up to four shots were fired by the officers, after police first encountered Jones holding a knife while standing on the front lawn. J.J. Hurley, 26, a close friend and neighbor of Jones and his family, witnessed the entire incident from outside. Neighbors said they believed Jones lunged at officers with the knife prior to the shots being fired. "It’s like I watched my little brother get shot, literally, I’ve known him since he was in diapers," Hurley said. "He had his problems, but he has never threatened anybody." Hurley, who was outside when police arrived on the scene and drew their firearms on Jones, said he saw officers with their guns drawn inside the home through a window prior to hearing gun shots. "The only people that were in the house when they fired were the cops and him," Hurley said. "Why didn’t they use non-lethal weapons like a taser?" Amanda Kelly, 23, another friend and neighbor of Jones, was distraught at the scene Thursday morning. Kelly received a text message from her sister Wednesday night. "I went outside after I got the text, went to the end of my driveway and I saw cops running around and screaming," Kelly said. "I just don’t understand why they would shoot him four times, he’s just a kid," she said. "I can understand shooting to stop him, but four times?" A resident of the housing complex who would not identify himself said he heard police screaming "drop the knife," when he walked outside after hearing police cruisers speeding in front of his home. The man said he knew Jones and that he was a good kid with some problems. "I have a lot of questions about this," he said. "Couldn’t they have tasered him? I find that many shots to stop an 18-year-old kid excessive." The circumstances of the shooting death are being examined by the provincial Special Investigation
